Why do you need my information?

We are creating the Nuclear Justice Community Archive. This will be a detailed catalogue of the Merlin database held at The National Archives (TNA) that may be used by members of the nuclear community, researchers and journalists. Any personal information will be anonymised.

What allows you to use my information?

This project uses data which is publicly available via the online Merlin database at TNA, which has a statutory obligation to preserve and make accessible records in the public interest. Please see the TNA Privacy Notice. We abide by the principle stated there that ’people who use information about living people from the archives have a duty, under data protection legislation, not to use that information in a way which may cause distress or damage to them.’ Because of this pledge, any personal information will be anonymised. All information within the collections contains public sector information licensed under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Source: The National Archives, Kew. Who will my information be shared with?

Information will be shared with project team members as we create the Nuclear Justice Community Archive. Discussion of project data will not occur beyond the project team and will only happen after consultation with LABRATS as representatives of the nuclear community

Do I have to provide this information and what will happen if I don't?

No. If your personal data is contained in the Merlin database you can request that it does not appear in the Nuclear Justice Community Archive. That said, the project team will make every effort to anonymise identifiable participant data that is found within the Merlin database.

Who will own my data once I submit it?

The Nuclear Justice Community Archive is owned by The University of Liverpool until 2027 when a plan will be devised to hand the archive to an appropriate public institution to preserve and maintain. This transfer will be organised with nuclear community representatives LABRATS.

How long will you keep this data for and why?

Following UKRI standard practices, our research data will be retained in an appropriate format and storage facility for a period of up to 10 years

How will my information be stored?

Data will be stored on secure SharePoint servers at The University of Liverpool. Subscription emails will be stored by LABRATS on their secure servers within the UK.

Will this information be used to take automated decisions about me?

No.

What rights do I have when it comes to my data?

Under the UK General Data Protection Regulation, you may have the following rights with regards to your personal data:

The Right to subject access – you have the right to see a copy of the personal data that the University holds about you and find out what it is used for.
The Right to rectification – you have the right to ask the University to correct or remove any inaccurate data that we hold about you.
The Right to erasure (right to be forgotten) - you have the right to ask the University to remove data that we hold about you.
The Right to restriction – you have the right to ask for your information to be restricted (locked down) on University systems.
The Right to data portability – you have the right to ask for your data to be transferred back to you or to a new provider at your request. Please note: The TNA will still hold all the raw data that the MoD have released to it, and the Nuclear Justice Community Archive Project has no control over that.
The Right to object – you have the right to ask the University to stop using your personal data or to stop sending you marketing information, or complain about how your data is used.
The Right to prevent automated decision making – you have the right to ask the University to stop using your data to make automated decisions about you or to stop profiling your behaviour (where applicable).

Who can I complain to if I am unhappy about how my data is used?
